Geotechnical and Environmental Engineers
A F Howland Associates was formed in 1981 to provide an independent practice offering a specialist service in geotechnical engineering and related disciplines.
We have a broad based expertise in both soft and hard rock conditions for a variety of engineering situations which include roads and highways, tunnels, earthworks, slope stability, and foundations
We have traditionally provided management contracting for civil engineering investigations and have routinely undertaken projects in both the public and private sectors for individual construction projects as well as major term contracts.
In addition, we offer a full consultancy in geotechnics, as well the complementary disciplines of geo-environmental and hydrogeological engineering. Our particular philosophy of approach is based on providing practical engineering solutions. This has found particular favour with client organisations and contractors alike.

In-house Plate Load Testing
The test is used to make a determination of the vertical deformation and strength characteristics of soil and can allow an estimate of ultimate bearing capacity, shear strength and modulus of sub-grade reaction to be made. Typical uses are for verification of the suitability of piling rig or crane mats (working platforms).
The method involves applying a load through a rigid plate and assessing the amount of settlement with time. The test may be carried out at ground surface or in shallow pits and trenches. A 'reaction load system' is required, which can be provided in a number of ways, most commonly by a piece of large plant that will remain stable throughout the test.
